Montblanc

Et enfin, la dernière étape de notre périple : Montblanc, charmant village médiéval conservant des murailles assez impressionnantes. Les photos que j'ai sélectionnées ne sont d'ailleurs pas forcément les plus représentatives de ce caractère médiéval mais Montblanc est également l'endroit le plus touristique que nous ayons visité et j'ai eu envie d'essayer de sortir un peu de ces clichés touristiques...

Following up on the architecture study, here is a new series trying to illustrate how diverse the urban landscapes in New York can be. Much more that I would have expected, anyway. And I was quite fascinated by all the lines your eyes can encounter: vertical lines that your eyes try to follow up the buildings or along the skyline, horizontal lines across the river and so many little urban geometrical details... Up & Down Santorini

Après la magnifique et relativement sauvage île de Milos , deuxième arrêt dans l'incontournable Santorini. Après le léger moment de flottement qu'on avait eu avec la question de l'hébergement à Milos, on s'est finalement résolu à moins improviser sur Santorini. Bon, "moins improviser", c'est relatif : c'est juste qu'on a réservé un hôtel quelques heures avant de prendre le ferry, grâce à Alexandra, notre hôtesse de Milos ! Cette fois, on est tombé sur un couple assez âgé absolument adorable. Le ferry ayant eu deux heures de retard, on a réveillé le pauvre petit monsieur en plein milieu de la nuit ! Mais de nouveau, on a complètement halluciné sur la gentillesse et la confiance dont les gens faisaient preuve. On ne savait pas exactement combien de temps on voulait rester. Comme à Milos, la réponse a été : "Bah, c'est pas grave, vous nous direz quand vous saurez !" Euh, bah, OK, super ! Bref, la découverte de Santorini se présentait bi...

San Francisco

After spending this incredible day -the last of 2013- in Death Valley , we were back on the road, heading North towards the second stop we had planned: San Francisco. Of course, a not-so-planned stop happened in-between because, basically, we also needed to eat and sleep! But we finally made it to San Francisco in the afternoon of the 1st of January, just in time to admire the Golden Gate Bridge in the light of sunset. Obviously, it is difficult to say anything truly original about this city because it completely is a part of our collective imagination, be it for its history, its cultural references or simply because we all saw at some point photos of its vertiginous streets, we all saw films with the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. So even though I'm not going to add anything new to all the things that have already been said or written about San Francisco, I simply wanted to share my enthusiasm and emotion to find myself in this beautiful city. Around Milos

J'ai déjà fait le résumé de notre séjour sur Milos , première étape de notre périple dans les îles l'été dernier. Voici maintenant le résumé en photos de notre journée autour de Milos ! C'est la première excursion payante qu'on a décidé de faire pendant ce séjour. Comme je le disais précédemment, ce ne sont pas les offres qui manquent et elles se valent à peu près toutes. Il y a plein de bateaux qui proposent des tours de l'île au départ d'Adamas. On s'est finalement décidé pour un petit voilier un peu au feeling, en se disant que ça serait sûrement plus sympa que les gros bateaux à moteur qui embarquent plein de touristes. Au final, on était peut-être une dizaine sur le bateau. A part nous et un couple plus âgé, tous les autres étaient des Grecs venus passer leurs vacances dans les îles, ce que j'ai trouvé plutôt sympa sur le coup. L'ambiance internationale, je l'ai déjà à Barcelone alors quand je pars en vacances, j'aime autant...

Los Angeles

Back to California: we left our heroes somewhere along Malibu , right before they made it to Los Angeles! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from Los Angeles, to be honest. Every time I heard someone talk about that city, I received very different comments, ranging from "It's awesome, you've got to go and see these Hollywood things, it's so cool" to "It's awful, such a terrible urban sprawl, I hated it". So I decided to try and keep a neutral mind about it and just go with the flow. I also have to stress at this point that after a quick consultation ("You're interested in seeing that Hollywood shit?" "Nope. You?" "Neither.") and unanimously reaching consensus among the two of us, we took the decision to skip the Hollywood-touristy part and focus on the Downtown-historical part. We had hardly more than one day to spend in Los Angeles so a choice had to be made... So I have no idea what the rest of the c...

Asaf Avidan (Cruïlla)

Third time I'm seeing Asaf Avidan live, after seeing him with band at Solidays a couple of years ago and after being totally blown away by his solo concert in Barcelona last year. Third time and yet, it is as difficult as ever to find the words to describe! Sensitive and primal, dreamy and desperate, Asaf Avidan's music is a subtle balance between catchy melodies and tortured vocals, entertaining story-telling and heart-breaking poems. I had never heard the songs from the last record live and I was particularly happy and moved to re-discover them, some being a real wonder in their live version. The rest of the concert was just pure Asaf Avidan, alternating between crushingly depressive songs and jokes with the audience -as if to allow us to catch our breath for a brief moment before continuing the journey... In Milos

Je reprends le cours du périple en Grèce de l'été dernier. Après tout, pour le premier post de cette nouvelle année 2016, ce n'est pas mal de rêver de vacances, de mer et de soleil ! J'avais laissé le récit à Athènes , dont on a bien profité pendant quelques jours, malgré une chaleur assez écrasante. Quand on en est parti, les deux seules choses qu'on savait, c'était où le premier ferry devait nous emmener, et d'où repartait notre avion trois semaines plus tard. On avait donc repéré Milos comme première étape du périple dans les îles mais on n'avait pas forcément envie de s'astreindre à des dates très précises. On s'était un peu dit qu'on verrait au jour le jour, histoire d'avoir la possibilité de s'adapter aux découvertes (ou aux déconvenues) sur place. Toutes ces idées ont évidemment été alimentées par le fait qu'en préparant les vacances, on était tombé sur plein de blogs de voyages racontant à quel point c'était fa...

After admiring the beautiful sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge and after spending the coldest night of my life in Oakland, my motivation was stronger than ever at the start of this second day in San Francisco. And that was lucky 'cause it turned out to be a rather busy day! As if to stress even more the impression of diversity I had a glimpse of on the previous day, we started strolling about Haight Street, the "anarchic" neighbourhood still known to be one of the most unconventional in the city. Some of the beautiful old houses still have a somewhat psychedelic look about them. There even was something of a Camden Town feel about some places of the neighbourhood (that is, the pre-touristy invasion Camden Town, of course), while other places just gave me the impression of having been teleported to a kind of weird Summer of Love revival! A walk in the Golden Gate Park provided us with a much quieter environment and allowed us to gather strength before climbing ...

Patti Smith (Primavera Sound)

Yes, Patti Smith... The name that brought a huge smile on my face when the line-up of this year's Primavera Sound was released. Last time I saw her was like, ten years ago. Her hair was not that white back then. But hell, she's still got it! It was both such a joyful and emotional gig that it's kind of hard to describe. On one hand, she made us sing and dance on mythical songs like "Gloria", "Redondo Beach" and "Land". She uplifted us with her eloquent speeches against big corporations and capitalism, her calls for peace and individual freedom. Yes, she belongs to another generation for whom these speeches actually made sense. We can pretend that we're too cynical for these speeches and that we can't really believe in them anymore. But the truth is that it feels good to be reminded of them. It feels good to see an artist this age still believe in them and still have a political conscience -particularly when the music industry is now su...
