Asaf Avidan

mai 01, 2015

It is not an easy task to describe an Asaf Avidan's concert. Maybe it is not an easy task to describe Asaf Avidan's music, to start with! I heard so many different comments, ranging from people who completely idolize him to people who praise his songwriting and people who simply cannot stand his high-pitched voice. I discovered his music via a friend who had already seen him live multiple times. To be honest, it was not until I saw him live for the very first time that I started to understand. Or maybe not "understand". Just "feel"... There's undeniably something amazing happening when Asaf Avidan is on stage -and that thing did not happen for me the first time I listened to one of his records. I had to live the live experience... I lived that experience even more intensely last year when the singer came to Barcelona to play his first concert in Spain. Alone on stage. I guess my fascination could be primarily explained by some obvious facts: Asaf A...

BRMC guerrilla

février 16, 2014

I'm putting on hold the photos of California to share with you a collective project. As some of you may vaguely have heard of, I'm a really big fan of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club . I love their music, their concerts and that feeling they always seem to give, be it on stage or on their records, to just show up, themselves, their guitars and their guts. It's only rock 'n' roll... but it just goes straight to the fucking point. A few weeks ago, as I was checking their Website to see if they would add come Spanish dates to their European tour, I came across this ... A "guerrilla"? Not to get all political and stuff but considering the current context in Spain and the fact that laws seriously restricting citizens' freedom are being passed in the middle of complete international indifference, the word and the idea found a particular echo. It may only be rock 'n' roll but... "Music takes us out of the actual and whispers to ...

Spring in New York

mai 21, 2015

Alright, I'm exaggerating a little... It was actually pretty cold when I was in New York and the skies were grey most of the week! Still, the sun made appearances from time to time and I have to admit that it completely changes the face of the city and the feeling that goes with it. This post also aims to show that everything is not that disproportionately vertical in New York, at least not everywhere. And if you open your eyes, you can even catch glimpses of colours here and there... Patti Smith (Primavera Sound)

juillet 03, 2015

Yes, Patti Smith... The name that brought a huge smile on my face when the line-up of this year's Primavera Sound was released. Last time I saw her was like, ten years ago. Her hair was not that white back then. But hell, she's still got it! It was both such a joyful and emotional gig that it's kind of hard to describe. On one hand, she made us sing and dance on mythical songs like "Gloria", "Redondo Beach" and "Land". She uplifted us with her eloquent speeches against big corporations and capitalism, her calls for peace and individual freedom. Yes, she belongs to another generation for whom these speeches actually made sense. We can pretend that we're too cynical for these speeches and that we can't really believe in them anymore. But the truth is that it feels good to be reminded of them. It feels good to see an artist this age still believe in them and still have a political conscience -particularly when the music industry is now su...

Toledo

Tori Amos (Primavera Sound)

juillet 10, 2015

A radically different style but I have to admit that Tori Amos was the second name on the line-up that made me pat myself of the back for buying my Primavera Sound pass at Christmas without knowing the line-up. Her appearances in Europe are not that numerous and as far as I know, this concert was her only scheduled date in Spain. Since I had never seen her live, I couldn't miss that opportunity... One of the other things that struck me when I discovered the line-up of this year's Primavera Sound was the unusually high number of female artists. And I don't mean "the girl who plays bass with" or "the girl on the keyboards" (even though I very much enjoyed the gigs of The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger , The Thurston Moore Band and The KVB !). No, I mean strong, powerful female song-writers, musicians and performers, each with very different and uncompromising styles, be them solo artists or in bands. And don't roll your eyes at me like I'm ...

Following the Lines of New York

mai 27, 2015

Following up on the architecture study, here is a new series trying to illustrate how diverse the urban landscapes in New York can be. Much more that I would have expected, anyway. And I was quite fascinated by all the lines your eyes can encounter: vertical lines that your eyes try to follow up the buildings or along the skyline, horizontal lines across the river and so many little urban geometrical details... Queens Of The Stone Age (Primavera Sound)

juin 13, 2014

Going on with the summary in images of this year's Primavera Sound. It's going to be hard for me to be very objective on this one. I love Queens Of The Stone Age and I've already seen them many times on stage. Well... Actually, I've seen Josh Homme many times on stage but it might as well have been with Eagles Of Death Metal or Them Crooked Vultures. Now that I think about it, maybe I've seen Queens Of The Stone Age less times than my failing memory seems to remember. No surprise, though: I found their gig at Primavera Sound absolutely brilliant! A really great energy on stage and hardly enough time to catch your breath in between songs and raging guitar riffs. I have to say I was particularly pleased to hear the songs from the last record live for the first time. They do translate very well in their live versions. And they clearly show that there is so much more than "stoner rock" to this band. My only regret: the apparent lack of dynamism coming fro...

The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger (Primavera Sound)

juillet 07, 2015

After seeing them last year at Rock en Seine for the first time, I've got to say I was quite happy to see The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger again -even though I'm still wondering what they were smoking when they came up with this name for their band. I think I enjoyed this concert even more than the previous one. Sean Lennon doesn't speak Spanish but he speaks such a lovely French that we forgive him. And he's so generous and good-humoured on stage that no one really cares about his linguistic skills anyway! In short, a very commendable live band, which proves that being "a son of" can easily be forgotten when the music is nice and interesting.
