It is not an easy task to describe an Asaf Avidan's concert. Maybe it is not an easy task to describe Asaf Avidan's music, to start with! I heard so many different comments, ranging from people who completely idolize him to people who praise his songwriting and people who simply cannot stand his high-pitched voice. I discovered his music via a friend who had already seen him live multiple times. To be honest, it was not until I saw him live for the very first time that I started to understand. Or maybe not "understand". Just "feel"... There's undeniably something amazing happening when Asaf Avidan is on stage -and that thing did not happen for me the first time I listened to one of his records. I had to live the live experience... Yes, Patti Smith... The name that brought a huge smile on my face when the line-up of this year's Primavera Sound was released. Last time I saw her was like, ten years ago. Her hair was not that white back then. But hell, she's still got it! It was both such a joyful and emotional gig that it's kind of hard to describe. On one hand, she made us sing and dance on mythical songs like "Gloria", "Redondo Beach" and "Land". She uplifted us with her eloquent speeches against big corporations and capitalism, her calls for peace and individual freedom. Yes, she belongs to another generation for whom these speeches actually made sense. We can pretend that we're too cynical for these speeches and that we can't really believe in them anymore. But the truth is that it feels good to be reminded of them. It feels good to see an artist this age still believe in them and still have a political conscience -particularly when the music industry is now su...

San Francisco

After spending this incredible day -the last of 2013- in Death Valley , we were back on the road, heading North towards the second stop we had planned: San Francisco. Of course, a not-so-planned stop happened in-between because, basically, we also needed to eat and sleep! But we finally made it to San Francisco in the afternoon of the 1st of January, just in time to admire the Golden Gate Bridge in the light of sunset. Obviously, it is difficult to say anything truly original about this city because it completely is a part of our collective imagination, be it for its history, its cultural references or simply because we all saw at some point photos of its vertiginous streets, we all saw films with the Golden Gate Bridge or Alcatraz. Following up on the architecture study, here is a new series trying to illustrate how diverse the urban landscapes in New York can be. Much more that I would have expected, anyway. And I was quite fascinated by all the lines your eyes can encounter: vertical lines that your eyes try to follow up the buildings or along the skyline, horizontal lines across the river and so many little urban geometrical details... Montblanc

Et enfin, la dernière étape de notre périple : Montblanc, charmant village médiéval conservant des murailles assez impressionnantes. Les photos que j'ai sélectionnées ne sont d'ailleurs pas forcément les plus représentatives de ce caractère médiéval mais Montblanc est également l'endroit le plus touristique que nous ayons visité et j'ai eu envie d'essayer de sortir un peu de ces clichés touristiques...

Back to California: we left our heroes somewhere along Malibu , right before they made it to Los Angeles! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from Los Angeles, to be honest. Every time I heard someone talk about that city, I received very different comments, ranging from "It's awesome, you've got to go and see these Hollywood things, it's so cool" to "It's awful, such a terrible urban sprawl, I hated it". So I decided to try and keep a neutral mind about it and just go with the flow. I also have to stress at this point that after a quick consultation ("You're interested in seeing that Hollywood shit?" "Nope. You?" "Neither.") and unanimously reaching consensus among the two of us, we took the decision to skip the Hollywood-touristy part and focus on the Downtown-historical part. A radically different style but I have to admit that Tori Amos was the second name on the line-up that made me pat myself of the back for buying my Primavera Sound pass at Christmas without knowing the line-up. Her appearances in Europe are not that numerous and as far as I know, this concert was her only scheduled date in Spain. Since I had never seen her live, I couldn't miss that opportunity... One of the other things that struck me when I discovered the line-up of this year's Primavera Sound was the unusually high number of female artists. And I don't mean "the girl who plays bass with" or "the girl on the keyboards" (even though I very much enjoyed the gigs of The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger , The Thurston Moore Band and The KVB !). No, I mean strong, powerful female song-writers, musicians and performers, each with very different and uncompromising styles, be them solo artists or in bands. After admiring the beautiful sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge and after spending the coldest night of my life in Oakland, my motivation was stronger than ever at the start of this second day in San Francisco. And that was lucky 'cause it turned out to be a rather busy day! As if to stress even more the impression of diversity I had a glimpse of on the previous day, we started strolling about Haight Street, the "anarchic" neighbourhood still known to be one of the most unconventional in the city. Some of the beautiful old houses still have a somewhat psychedelic look about them. There even was something of a Camden Town feel about some places of the neighbourhood (that is, the pre-touristy invasion Camden Town, of course), while other places just gave me the impression of having been teleported to a kind of weird Summer of Love revival! A walk in the Golden Gate Park provided us with a much quieter environment and allowed us to gather strength before climbing ...

Still trying to catch up with last year's photos that I haven't published yet! So we're going to travel a few months back in time, more precisely in May 2014 when I went to see Jace Everett in concert in Barcelona. Who is Jace Everett, some of you may wonder. Well, very easy answer: he is the voice of True Blood's theme song "Bad Things". Yeah, you see the one... "I wanna do bad things with you..." That's right. Now you may think what you want of the show: that song is pretty amazing (and so is the music they choose in general, by the way). But as unbelievable as it may sound, turns out Mr. Everett did many other things completely unrelated to HBO & Co. For his misfortune, none of these things reached the level of fame that "Bad Things" did, even inspiring one of my favourite rock bands to contribute their very own version of the song . First real (positive) shock of this second day: Selah Sue, her incredible voice and contagious energy. Sure, I knew her before, I probably even had listened to her records. But honestly, seeing her live is a whole different experience. And now that I've seen her, I'm wondering what took me so long! Plus, she's probably not even 25 so I really hope she keeps pursuing her interesting career for a long, long time and that she'll come back to Barcelona soon!
